We’re looking forward to the Toledo Festival of the Arts being an incredible event for our organization! We’ve had a fantastic response from artists, and invitations were sent out on April 17th. To ensure everything runs smoothly and creates a great experience for everyone, we truly need our volunteers . We encourage all members—along with friends and family—to sign up! You can find the volunteer link on our website under the Toledo Festival of the Arts tab at the top of the page, as well as here.

Message from our officers

Spring is here, and it’s almost time to elect new board members! We will hold a membership meeting on May 13th at 6:00 PM. In May, we will also provide an online voting ballot for members to participate in this important process. While officers and most board members will remain in their roles through 2027, a few vacancies will be open. As outlined in our by-laws, this election is essential to maintaining our non-profit 501(c)(3) status.

The Toledo Artists’ Club depends on its members to thrive. Strong leadership helps guide the organization and ensures we remain a vital part of the community. When each volunteer contributes a little, it adds up to something meaningful as a whole

MAY SALE

It's back! The Artist's Village annual May Sale!

The May Sale at the Artist Village at Toledo Botanical Garden is a big annual spring event and fundraiser —basically a celebration of art, gardening, and the start of the season.

What it is

It’s a multi-day, free, open-to-the-public event where all the artist guilds and groups in the village open up and sell their work.

What you’ll find in the Village

Art for sale (paintings, glass, pottery, photography, etc.)
Plant sales and garden-related items
Live demos (like glassblowing, stained glass, pottery)
Open studios —you can walk through and meet artists
Special exhibits , including shows by the Toledo Artists’ Club
Hands-on activities

The Toledo Night Market take place in the Garden:
Friday, May 8th, 4-9 pm
Saturday, May 9th, 3-9 pm

They will have Artisans, Live music, food trucks galore, craft drinks & more! Food Trucks will be in front of the conference center not blocking our building as in previous years.

�� What's new for us this year?

The Toledo Artists’ Club is inviting members to sell their artwork at the club! We will stay open during the Night Market... more potential for visitors and sales!

Members can drop off their work, and the club will handle sales on your behalf. There is no fee for table space, and you are not required to be present during the event—unless you’d like to volunteer . Artwork will be displayed on tables in the classroom, and all transactions will be managed through the office. The club will retain a 25% commission on all sales. Please let us know if you would like to drop off work for the May Sale!

Drop off will take place May 5, 6, and 7th, during club hours 11 am - 3 pm. or by appointment. email Linda at info@toledoartistclub.com A limited number of pieces will be invited to stay on display in the classroom after the sale.

We look forward to you joining us for a free exhibition and sale of your art at the 3 ^rd annual Pop-Up Art Gallery/Sale at the Otsego Thompson Stone Hall, 20000 West River Rd., Bowling Green, OH, 43402 (St Rt 235 & St Rt 65 on the Maumee River.)

Day: Thursday, May 14

Time: 4:00 to 8:00 PM

Place: Thompson Stone Hall, Otsego Park

FREE FOR YOU AND THE PUBLIC!

The Concept:

We want artists to display some of their artwork for the public to peruse and buy, if you choose. You will have a 6’ by 2’-6” table for display. Please put a price on your work and let the public know how to contact you (business cards or QR codes). You will also be responsible for collecting payment for any work sold. Our goal is to expose the public to the wonderful artists in our area and to help you advertise your work!

You will need to furnish any easels you may need but may use only one floor easel. If you need a floor easel, we do have some we could loan you (Call Diana: 419-832-2203). We will have approximately 25 tables set up and will assign artists to tables through a random drawing. Artists will be responsible for their own sales. NO commissions will be taken by GRAC. GRAC members will be available to help you unload and reload your artwork.

“En plein air” artists are encouraged to paint outside along the river during the event. The setting along the Maumee in the late afternoon and evening is always beautiful. You may also offer your work for sale either outside or by securing a table inside via the information below. However, if “plein air” artists wish to display their work inside, specify if you want a table when you respond to this email and we can accommodate it if space allows.

We will offer beer and wine for purchase and a free charcuterie for all who attend. In addition, we will draw the name of an artist who attends for a cash award of $100.

We are excited to promote your art and look forward to hearing from you!

Bowling Green Art Walk

BOWLING GREEN ART WALK
Saturday, May 9, 2026
1:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Bowling Green Arts Council is proud to announce Art Walk 2026, a visual arts show and musical performances in locations throughout downtown Bowling Green.

Eligibility and Requirements
Anyone living within 50 miles of Bowling Green is eligible to participate. Artists may display works in any size or medium as space and amenities of the chosen venue allow. Work must be‘ family-friendly ’and acceptable by the venue. All work must be properly presented (i.e., framed, mounted or matted, with a hanging device if needed).

Each artist must meet with their merchant at least one week prior to the event. Artists or their representatives are strongly encouraged to be present at the venue during the. event to talk to visitors about their work and to conduct sales.

One work should be brought to the Wood County District Public Library at 12:30pm for the jury review, 251 N Main St, Bowling Green Bowling Green. Please label your artwork for the Library display (Name, Title, Medium, Price or NFS), and let us know if you need an easel or a table. Set-up at the merchant location is from 1-1:30 p.m. unless you have made early arrangements with your venue.

All artists are invited to the After Party at Myla Marcus Winery from 5-6 p.m. for refreshments, music and awards. Brochures listing all artists/locations will be distributed throughout the area.

I’m reaching out on behalf of The Scribe, an Ohio arts newspaper dedicated to showcasing diverse voices, creative expression, and original work from emerging and established artists alike. Our mission is to provide a platform where art, writing, and ideas can reach a wider audience and spark meaningful conversation within our community.

We are currently seeking submissions from artists who would like to have their work featured in an upcoming issue. This includes visual arts, performing arts, photography, poetry, short prose, and other creative formats.

Toledo Women's Art League (TWAL) in April

The Toledo Women's Art League will display their annual gallery show for the month of April.

Important dates:

Thursday, March 26 – Friday, March 27 between 1 and 4 pm - Drop off paintings at TAC
Friday, March 27 – Jurying. Please note that approximately 50 pieces of artwork will be juried into the show due to space constraints. Limit of 3 entries. Artwork that is not accepted for the exhibit should be picked up during normal TAC office hours no later than Saturday, April 4, unless other arrangements are made.

Drawing Bootcamps

Part I: Drawing Bootcamp June 4,11, & 18

Drawing is about finding relationships and problem-solving, so learning to draw from observation is an essential element to enhancing creative thinking in all areas of life.

In this class we will introduce and practice the skills you need to become excellent at drawing. These include perceiving edges, positive and negative space, and using a viewfinder and a grid. Becoming better at drawing can eliminate some frustrations in painting as you become better able to plan compositions and analyze value within your paintings. If you have always wanted to learn how to draw, or feel you missed out on some basics, this class if for you. The premise of this class is that everyone can learn how to draw. Appropriate for mature high school students.

Part II: Drawing Bootcamp: Light and Shadow, September 3,10,17

These three sessions will focus on light and shadow, perceiving value relationships, and understanding "light logic" including cast shadow, form shadow and reflected light. You do not need to have attended the first session of the Drawing Bootcamp although that will have been helpful.

In this class we will introduce and practice the skills you need to become excellent at drawing. These include perceiving light and dark and using value create space and form. Come shop for unique art supplies, frames, and art mediums at low prices. We have a couple hundred frames available. These are primarily from Michaels and sizes range from 8"x10" to 18"x 24". prices 75% off retail.

Bring any art related supplies - paint, pencils, frames, easels, ANYTHING ART related. TAC is accepting donations during regular club hours.

Member Meeting Information

On Tuesday, February 4th we had a gallery meet and greet and members meeting.

We had a great turnout. The following was discussed.

During calendar year 2025, the Art Club generated $31,071.57 in total income. The majority of revenue came from membership dues, exhibition fees, Giving Day, and club fundraising events. Additional income was received from commission retained on sales and a portion of workshop fees held at the club.

Total expenses for the year were $26,767.84, with payroll representing the largest expense at $9,764.55. While we were saddened to lose Laura Williams as Gallery Manager, the club was not able to sustain a paid employee at this time. We are especially grateful to the dedicated volunteers who staff the club during business hours, ensuring we remain open to the public.

The year concluded with a net income of $4,303.73.

For calendar year 2026, a budget has been prepared to guide the club's financial planning. Membership fees have been increased, and we anticipate that the Toledo Festival of the Arts show will generate substantial income to help build the club's cash balance. In addition, plans are underway to establish a building maintenance reserve to cover unforeseen expenses, such as the internet issue that occurred in December.

The Toledo Festival of the Arts is June 27 and 28th.

Join other artists for a monthly evening of life drawing from a live, undraped model. Poses will range from 1 minute to 60 minutes. Tables and chairs are available to use. Bring your own drawing materials and easel (if you need an easel). Cost is $15 for each 2.5-hour session. Relaxed, respectful, non-judgmental atmosphere. No instruction, just people who love drawing the human figure.

Open to all. No TAC membership is required.

RENT OUR GALLERY FOR YOUR SOLO ART EXHIBITION!

Are you ready to showcase your work, gain greater exposure, and share your artistic vision with the community? The gallery at the Toledo Artists' Club is now available for three-week solo exhibition rentals.

This opportunity is open to both members and non-members and includes comprehensive gallery support. Our team will collaborate with you to curate and professionally install your exhibition. A gallery manager will be on-site Tuesday through Saturday, 11 AM–3 PM, to welcome visitors and oversee the space.

All artwork sales are commission-free. A minimal 5% fee applies only to credit card transactions. We will also extend special gallery hours for your opening reception to help you make the most of your debut.

The Toledo Artists' Club will begin accepting donations on February 4th during club hours. Bring any art-related supplies, including paint, pencils, canvas, paper, and easels. Please make sure any items you bring are in good condition. When dropping off items, please sign in on the garage sale sheet.

If you would like to sell your own items as a vendor, reserve your place by February 15th by using the online form , emailing info@toledoartistclub.com, or calling the office during club hours. Vendor space is free for members or $10 for non-members.

Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with “ Strength in Unity ” on January 19 at the Toledo Museum of Art.

Join us from 11:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. for an inspiring keynote in the Little Theater by Dr. Maurice Stinnett, a soul-stirring performance by BGSU Voices, and creative, family-friendly activities led by our Family Center and Outreach Team.

Come honor Dr. King’s legacy through community, reflection, and the collective power of coming together.

Growth

Thanks to the generous support from Art Is the Garden, Day of Giving, Inktober, the Plein Air Competition, Matting Workshop, and Heralding the Holidays, our financial picture has greatly improved. These events and contributions allow us to take meaningful steps toward continued growth. Over the past month, we’ve welcomed several new members and are excited about the programs and events on the horizon.

Looking ahead to 2026, we plan to establish a reserve account in addition to our regular checking account to help ensure long-term sustainability. While we currently have no employees, we are incredibly grateful for our dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers who make so much of our work possible. We also continue to partner with Sue Gwozdz for bookkeeping services.

Our budget for the coming year and much more will be shared a January Members Meeting -

Heralding the Holidays 2025 results:

$3,352.22 in gross sales (per Square report dated 12/17/25)
$900.00 from table rentals
$4,252.22 total collected

Expenses:

$1,127.99 artist commissions paid to date
$35.00 estimated remaining commission for small items (to be paid next week)

Net profit: $3,089.23

A huge thank you to our generous donors, talented artists, and dedicated volunteers who helped make this year’s event such a success—we truly couldn’t do it without you!

If you have artwork from Heralding the Holidays still at the club, please plan to pick it up on December 23, 30 or early in January . We will be doing a major refresh for the new year. Artists with Plein Air event paintings or work that has been at the club for more than three months are also encouraged to retrieve their artwork on those dates or early in January. Please let us know when you pick up your work so we can update our records.

Opportunities for Toledo Artists Club members rent out the gallery or to sell work in the gift shop, bins, classroom, or hall will be available in 2026 . Sign-up information will be shared in January.

Can you Make a Holiday Basket for our Auction?

Last year the silent auction of our holiday baskets generated close to $1000! Your basket should have a minimum value of $40. Popular items for the baskets were small paintings, holiday theme baskets, gift cards, wine, and pet items. Be creative and do your own thing! Make it fun. “Most Creative” wins $50! The visitors will vote; the winner will be announced at the end of the event.

Basket Option: If you donate $50 + to the club, we will be happy to make a basket for you and put your name on it. We love doing this! Please let us know by November 15.

Do you like to Bake?

We also do very well with sales of cookies, breads, and candies. Donate your favorite delectable baked goods to the club. Please bring them to the club Thursday, Dec. 4 from 11 am to 8 pm., or anytime during the event. The Toledo Women’s Art League and other volunteers will sort and package them for display. YUM! YUM!

Plein Air Competition

The Toledo Artists’ Club Plein Air Competition took place October 9–11, 2025, at the beautiful Toledo Botanical Gardens. We were fortunate to have wonderful weather and a great turnout — 15 artists painted throughout the gardens.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the club members and volunteers who helped make the event a success—especially Mike Hill, Thom Frushour, and Ellie Miller for their extra support.

Ink tober

Moderators Don Meyers and Mandy Nuño congratulate everyone who completed the 31 Drawings in 31 Days October challenge! Artists explored a wide variety of inks and techniques during six Monday meet-ups. Kudos to all who participated, including Pam Kelso, Pam Fletcher, Ellie Miller, Kevin Younger, Kate Arnos, Jean McDonald, Jennifer Sader, Melody Good, Kitty Pattay, and Lisa Bornwell.

Our "Fall Juried Exhibit" will be on view at the Hickman Gallery in Adrian, Michigan from Wednesday, October 29 – Wednesday, December 3, 2025, with a public reception to be held on Saturday, November 8, from 11am to 1pm.

The exhibition, to be juried by Barbara Miner, Professor of Art and Chair of the Department of Art at The University of Toledo (Ohio), will include paintings, ceramics and more created by members of the Athena Art Society. The Athena Art Society is a non-profit, women's arts organization based in Toledo, Ohio, comprising professional artists across Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.

The Bedford Art Show

Here is some information about the Annual Arts for Our Future show coming up at the Bedford Branch Library. The cost is $30 to enter up to 3 pieces in 6 categories. Art needs to be dropped off at the library on Thursday, October 30, and a reception will be held on Sunday, November 2, at 3 pm.

Roche de Boeuf

This Roche de Boeuf Bridge article was authored by local freelance writer Carroll McCune. It may be of huge interest to the throngs of people who visit the site for various reasons, for the many photographers and plein air or studio artists who like to capture it with their talents, and for anyone who just likes to preserve beautiful historical landscapes and would appreciate this update.

We sincerely thank everyone who continues to support the Toledo Artists’ Club!

We are deeply grateful to everyone who supported our Day of Giving campaign on August 22. Your generosity makes it possible for us to sustain the club’s daily operations, provide gallery opportunities for artists to exhibit and sell their work, and offer meaningful programs such as classes, workshops, and community gatherings. Contributions are still being received, and we look forward to sharing the final total at our upcoming membership meeting. Stay tuned for details!

This year, 30+ members contributed 112 pieces of artwork for our Art in the Garden sale. Unsold pieces will remain available in our classroom and at the Roche de Boeuf Festival in Waterville on September 27. Some pieces will also be displayed in the classroom for sale.

If you’re interested in volunteering—even just once a month—please let us know. Email info@toledoartistclub.com. It's easy to welcome visitors and handle sales via Square. Training provided. You can bring art to work on, read a book from our art library, or invite friends and family to accompany you.

Every child is an artist… the problem is staying an artist when you grow up. – Pablo Picasso

My passion for art was ignited during my childhood when my mother, after training at the Toledo Museum of Art, introduced me to Van Gogh, Seurat, Monet, Picasso, Whistler, and Homer, weaving tales of their techniques, historical context, and inspirations. From that moment, I knew I wanted to become an artist. As my interest in art blossomed, so did my fascination with politics during the tumultuous era of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. I became an editorial cartoonist, fortunate to have my work published in the Findlay Courier, the Toledo Blade, BGSU News, and UT Collegian. In 1984, I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Bowling Green State University, merging my majors in Life Drawing and Painting with studies in Political Science and History. Post-graduation, I navigated toward Advertising and Marketing, building a fulfilling career while balancing marriage, children, and coaching soccer. For thirty-five years, painting took a back seat—until now. Encouraged by my family, I am finally pursuing my lifelong dream of being a full-time artist as I head towards retirement.

Nancy graduated with a degree in Fine Art from Bowling Green State University with an emphasis on painting and specializing in Graphic Design. She has worked in many different mediums through the years, but Colored Pencil is where her passion lies. She strives for realism in her work and her subjects are diverse. Costumed Life Drawing with the Hyter Group

For five sessions in May artists were given the opportunity to work from a model who dressed as a
sorceress. The engaging model in her dramatic costume inspired a variety of bold interpretations.

The Hyter Portrait Group is a great opportunity to work from a live model. The group meets at Common Space One on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $5 per session. Check out the group’s Facebook page for more information.

A Strategy for Drawing People

“Big to Small” and “Simple to Complex” are two principles I rely on when drawing and painting. If the complexity is simplified to basic shapes at the start, I can better judge proportions as the drawing progresses. By omitting or subtracting information, the drawing can be softened which is more characteristic of a young female like this model.

If you like to draw, the Hyter Portrait Group is a great place to sketch from life. The group meets at

The Fabric of Our Community:
an exhibition of textile and fiber arts.

The Bowling Green Arts Council is offering a new opportunity for artists and artisans with an exhibition of fiber and textile art, May 23 - June 20, in downtown Bowling Green.The exhibit will be on display at the BGAC ArtSpace 178 S. Main Street (rear entrance), Bowling Green, with an opening reception May 23, 5 pm-7 pm. Artists may submit up to two works, and the registration deadline is May 16.

The video is based on the exhibition, Watercolors Unboxed, that was displayed at the Worcester Art Museum from June 10, 2023 – September 10, 2023. In the video, the curator for the exhibition compares the watercolor techniques of Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent, perhaps the greatest American painters in watercolor. Spring is finally here! It’s almost time to elect new board members and officers to begin our new fiscal year, which begins in June. In May, we will provide an online voting ballet for our members to take part in this process. Our by-laws outline this election as a necessary step to retain our non-profit 501(c)(3) status. The Toledo Artists’ Club relies on its members to stay in existence. We need strong leaders to guide the organization and make us an important part of the community. A little from each volunteer, brings a lot as a group!.

Getting started in Plein Air Painting

All artists are invited to attend this free program. If you have painted plein air, please come with your equipment. We will have a show and tell about plein air equipment, and share tips about painting on location. Sponsored by the Tuesday Plein Air painters and the Monday Morning Painters. Dear En Plein Air Artist,

The Grand Rapids Arts Council cordially invites you to paint at three of our events for the public.

One, our Pop-Up Art Gallery, will be held Thursday, May 22nd at the Otsego Park's Thompson Stone Hall ( 20000 W. River Rd., Bowling Green, Ohio 43402) on the beautiful Maumee River near Grand Rapids from 4 to 8pm. Local artists will be displaying their art for the public to see and buy inside the building.

The second event is the Rally by the River Days—three days (July 11,12,and 13) of fun activities for the public, beginning with a Kick-Off party Friday evening, and including a duck drop on the canal on Saturday, and a cardboard boat race on Sunday.

The third event is our long-running Sunset Jazz and Arts Festival which will be held Sunday, August 17th in Grand Rapids on the towpath next to the Maumee River from 2 pm to sunset (about 8). Five jazz ensembles will be playing throughout the afternoon, with beer, wine and food available for purchase by the crowd. Hundreds of people from multiple counties (and states) have come to this event for years.

With his 3D model, California artist John Asaro reduced the complexity of a human head into simpler planes. In this charcoal drawing, I over-emphasized the planes of the head using the concepts of the “Asaro Head.” I pushed the chiseled features to convey the robust qualities of Jake, our model at the Hyter Portrait Group.

Bowling Green Art Walk

Bowling Green Arts Council is proud to announce Art Walk 2025 May 10, an art show in which locations throughout downtown Bowling Green will host artists’ displays and performances. This year we will be expanding to include more businesses and locations and are pleased to be coordinating with the United Way Chocolate Crawl! Anyone living within 50 miles of Bowling Green is eligible to participate. Artists may display works in any size or medium as space and amenities of the chosen venue allow. Work must be‘ family-friendly ’and acceptable by the venue.

The library and shrink wrap machine are located in the room that opens on the west side of the studio. Both are available for member's use. The library boasts a wide variety of books on various styles and techniques of art. Sign out books on the clipboard in the room. Donations to the library are welcome.

Use the shrink wrap machine to prepare your artwork for sale or to protect it. There is an instructional manual in the worktable, and Laura, our Gallery and Studio Manager, is available for assistance.

Please consider making a donation if you use the library or the machine; there is a box on the wall in the room for that purpose.

A letter from TFAS President Condessa Croninger

More than 107 years ago, in June of 1917, a small group of enterprising leaders in the arts, led by Toledo Museum of Art Director George Stevens, came together to form the Toledo Federation of Art Societies. Their mission: to strengthen the arts through collaboration and provide professional development opportunities for local artists, presenting their first juried exhibition in May of 1918. The annual "May Show" became the renowned Toledo Area Artists exhibits at the Museum for 94 years, later revived as a self-hosted juried regional, the TFAS:100+ exhibitions, in 2020 and 2022. Hundreds of thousands of dollars (not adjusted for inflation) were distributed to thousands of artists over the ensuing 100 years. In 1948, a new component of professional opportunities for artists was launched with the creation of the Federation's Permanent Collection.

From a few disparate clubs in 1917 to the vast network of the arts we enjoy in our community today, the work of our Founders and the hundreds and thousands of artists who came after them succeeded far beyond those initial expectations of 1917—They made the arts a powerful, shining light in our community.

But the world has changed in 107 years, how could it not? An all-volunteer band of delegates from myriad organizations, meeting monthly (at 10:10 on Saturday mornings) can no longer administer to all the aspects of arts administration required to maintain a regular schedule of professional exhibition and care for an annually increasing art collection.

In the face of this long-approaching state of affairs, the Federation is now ended. But that collaboration first envisioned by our Founders does not end; it is everywhere, integrally part of the very fabric of Toledo, ironically proving that, truly, we no longer need TFAS. A rarity among non-profits, we are one that has fully achieved its mission.

Drawing Boot Camp: Perspective

Jan. 27, Feb. 3, and Feb. 10 | 6-8 p.m.

These three sessions of Drawing Bootcamp will focus on using linear perspective to create the illusion of three-dimensional space. We will use both one-point and two-point perspective to construct an illusion of 3 dimensional space from imagination. We will then put this knowledge into practice while drawing from observation. We will use a viewfinder to assist in building the skills of sighting and measuring in order to create accurate representation of space.

Linda Shetzer wins contest

Linda Shetzer, Toledo Artists' Club member and co-chair of the Exhibitions Committee, is the winner of the first Sights of Seneca County Official Chip Contest for her potato chip bag design. And Seneca Sweet BBQ is the official flavor, also known as Smokey Sweet Mesquite.

Destination Seneca County made the announcement Friday with its partners Tiffin Municipal Arts Commission, Fostoria Community Arts Council and Ballreich’s Snack Food Co.

Seventeen chip bag designs were submitted last fall after the contest was announced in September, and more than 800 people voted for their favorites in November and December 2023.

Last year the silent auction of our holiday baskets generated close to $1000! Your basket should have a minimum value of $40. Popular items in the past were small paintings, holiday theme baskets, gift cards, wine, and pet items. Be creative and do your own thing! Make it fun. “Most Creative” wins $50! The visitors will vote; the winner will be announced at the end of the event.

Basket Option: If you donate $50 to the club, Bren and Laura will be happy to make a basket for you and put your name on it. We love doing this! Please let us know by November 15. Note: If your basket wins “most creative” contest with this option, TAC will receive the $50.

We also do very well with sales of cookies, breads, and candies. Donate your favorite delectable baked goods to the club. Please bring them to the club Thursday, Dec. 5 from 11 am to 8 pm., or anytime during the event. The Toledo Women’s Art League volunteers will sort and package them for display. YUM! YUM!

It is with great sadness that we announce we have lost our greatest fan and friend. Joe passed away after a brief illness. He will be sorely missed for his friendship and dedication in bringing our club into current times. Joe was a friendly, jovial, kind, good-humored man, always ready to lend his expertise to anyone who asked. Joe loved hanging out with us and was a very generous with his time. He always had new ideas to share and helped us stay on track with our many events. He was always there for us.

"Currently "Exploring Assemblage with Found Objects". Many hours are spent
scavenging scrap yards and flea market-type vents collecting mostly metal pieces that can be reused, re-cycled into one-of-a-kind garden art. My studio is filled with a wealth of
unusual pieces that when welded together gives the discarded pieces a whole new purpose.
I have always had an interest in creating art. A pencil and paper was my vice as a child.
I love bright colors in my art although I only wear dull colors! Go figure.

2024 Show Details

The purpose of this show is to provide visual artists the opportunity to compete and exhibit in our community; to allow the public to appreciate this artistic talent; and to further our community’s cultural development by the permanent display of selected artwork at the Bedford Branch Library.

The Bedford Arts for Our Future Show will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2024 at the Bedford Branch Library, 8575 Jackman Road, Temperance, MI. Artists may enter a total of three (3) works. At least one piece must be available for purchase. Paintings, drawings and photographs are limited in size to 36” width including frame because of limited space and must be ready to hang with wire.

Norma Thomas-Herr and her brother-in-law, Daniel Joseph Herr, donated two handmade art display racks to the Toledo Artist Club. Daniel, a woodworker, used scraps of lumber and created the design for the racks himself. We thank Daniel for all the thinking, measuring, cutting, and hard work to make these useful racks.

Olympic Athletes

For the first four decades of competition, the Olympics awarded official medals for painting, sculpture, architecture, literature and music, alongside those for the athletic competitions. From 1912 to 1952, juries awarded a total of 151 medals to original works in the fine arts inspired by athletic endeavors.

Christopher Leeper is a full-time artist from Canfield, OH. He is the author of Realism in Watermedia, North Light. He has illustrated four children's books for the Smithsonian and the African Wildlife Foundation. His work has been featured in several books and publications, including The Artist's Magazine, American Artist, Plein Air Magazine and Ohio Magazine. He is a member of the adjunct faculty in the Department of Art at Youngstown State University. He served as president of the Ohio Watercolor Society (2008-2012). Christopher graduated from Youngstown State University in 1988 with a BFA degree in graphic design.

If you have always wanted to learn how to draw, or feel you missed out on some basics, this class is for you. Drawing is about finding relationships and problem-solving. Learning to draw from observation is an essential element to enhancing creative thinking in all areas of life.

In these 3 sessions we will learn to use a grid to increase accuracy, and practice sighting and measuring skills. The grid is used to enlarge a drawing to any size so that a small sketch can become a finished painting, or a detailed drawing can become a mural. By practicing the skills to become excellent at drawing you can eliminate frustrations in painting as you become better at planning compositions. Appropriate for adults and mature high school students. You do not need to have attended previous sessions of the Drawing Boot Camp. Bring a drawing of your own or a photo or painting that you would like to enlarge.

Hello TAC members! Please attend the opening reception for a unique collection of paintings by Bowling Green artist Doug Vanderzwart. The opening reception is this Friday, July 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 as a part of the Redbird Sylvania Art Walk.

Doug is a wood carver and painter. He combines super thick Golden gel medium with paint and paper and other media to make portions of his paintings three-dimensional. He also hand makes each of his frames, and will sometimes carve the edge of the frame to extend the image of the painting into the frame.

In all of my years as an artist, I’ve never seen anything like it. I think it’s really interesting and inspirational. Please stop by if you’re able, or stop out anytime before July 26 to look at his work.

Video and Book Reviews: an occasional feature in the Sketchpad

I have been considering adding gold or metal leaf to my paintings, because of the striking effects that can be achieved with metal leaf. I came across an excellent YouTube video by Nancy Reyner (link below). Nancy carefully explains how to apply and work with metal leaf while creating artwork. Her video presentation is well organized, providing clear step by step demonstrations applying leaf to artists' panels, and introducing and critiquing the needed materials.She also references a book she published on the topic, Acrylic Illuminations , which is available in paper or ebook form on Amazon.

This large, full-length portrait, still in its original, massive gilt frame, was assembled from separate sheets of paper laid on canvas and drawn entirely in pastel. The most sought-after portraitist of his day, La Tour worked exclusively in pastel, producing likenesses of the nobility and the wealthy middle class that were applauded for both their technical mastery and their astonishing verisimilitude. In fact, one contemporary critic marveled that such a work as this portrait could be created using crayons. Learn more about the portrait here .

Avoid distant views, paint objects close up. If the foreground is well done, the distance will take care of itself. By having the big lines of the composition go out of the canvas, your imagination can wander beyond the edge. It will make it seem part of a large composition. Drawing Bootcamp: Light and Shadow

Help Create a Mosaic of Member's Artwork at TAC.

The Club is creating a mosaic of member's artwork using 5.75 inch square wood panels. Any subject, any medium. The panels will be mounted on a display board to create a mosaic which will be permanently on exhibit at the Club. Here's your chance to have your artwork displayed at the Club for all eternity. :-) It would be great to have every member make a "tile" for the mosaic!

Blank panels are available at the Club at no cost. We hope to install the mosaic in June, but panels can be added after that date as they come in. Create a panel, proudly sign it and bring it to the Club during regular business hours.

Our roster is growing. In April, 23 new members joined the Club! We are such a vital organization, hopping with new energy, activities and ideas.
Looking for more 3-D work. The club is eager to attract artists working in three dimensions. Outdoor art for the garden is of special interest. Member Bob Coffield sold two large sculptures this year, both of which had been displayed outside the Club.
The Artist's Showcase is open to all members . The walls of the Studio are a SHOWCASE for members work. Bring framed artwork or 3D pieces to the Club for show and for sale.
New tools ready for use in the freshly renovated workroom. A shrink-wrap machine and mat cutter are set up in the workroom , just off the Studio. No charge for members but donations are accepted.

While many have focused on Monet's "Impression, Sunrise" , as a key Impressionist painting, another image was pivotal to the movement that launched 150 years ago.

In art, it's all about the hands – those that make it and those that they create. Take, for example, the hands that weave the intimate narrative of young motherhood in the small canvas The Cradle, 1872, a masterpiece of absorbing gestures by Berthe Morisot, the only female artist invited to participate in the inaugural exhibition of French Impressionist work, which opened 150 years ago in Paris on 15 April 1874.

The club welcomes three dimensional art in addition to two dimensional work. Submit your sculptures, carvings and assemblages for our regular shows.

The Lending Library, located in the room on the north side of the studio, with a large collection of art books and tapes, is now available.

The shrink wrap machine is located in the same room; members may use it. The club requests a donation to support the cost of materials. Linda, our Gallery Manager, can demonstrate its use.

Tuesday Plein Air group

The Tuesday Plein Air group meets weekly at various sites around northwest Ohio to paint, followed by lunch and discussion. All club members are welcome. The first meeting is April 16.

Our plein air registration is taking off! We have 75 adult registrations in less than 2 weeks. Registration is capped at 125 adults, so don't wait to register. Picturesque Sylvania offers the artist many landscape and architectural options including accessible residential and commercial areas all conveniently nestled between two park systems including a river trail and a historical village. All Festival activities are located within walkable areas. Downtown Sylvania boasts ample parking and is a short distance from US-23 and I-475.

This exhibition is presented exclusively online at the Toledo Artists' Club website. No size limit is set; media, technique and subject as the artist chooses. You may submit digital images (.JPG) of up to three original works of art. All submissions must be made through the online prospectus. The show will be promoted on the Toledo Artists' Club website and Facebook page, to the public, and area art organizations. All artwork must be original, completed within the last four years, and not produced in a class or workshop. Artwork that received an award in any previous exhibition at the Toledo Artists’ Club will be considered for display, but is not eligible for an award.

Sienna is a natural pigment that has been used for centuries by artists around the world. The ancient Romans were aware of its properties and used it in its natural form. The pigment was originally mined near Arcidosso, which was once under Sienese control...Sienna became one of the standard browns used by artists from the 16th to 19th centuries, including Caravaggio and Rembrandt, who used all three earth colors in their palettes. The Toledo Artists’ Club received another grant from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) for Local Arts and Cultural Organizations and Artists

Thanks to the hard work of several members, the Club received a second round of financial support to make the our programs and outreach better serve the membership and the community.

A website to facilitate entering or publicizing exhibitions.

Café for artists allows artists to search for opportunities, including exhibitions, festivals, grants
and several other categories, and to limit the search to a local area, statewide or international.
The service is free. Here is the website for artist calls. Several of our members have used the
site and recommend it.

Café for art galleries assists in many ways to help create a call for artists. Our Board is considering joining Café. Advantages include broadening the area from which we might get entries, and assisting with most areas of publicizing an exhibition, managing entries and jurying. However, for the club the service is not free. The Board is weighing advantages and costs.

Class are open to members and non-members at modest costs. Classes are held at the Club in our remodeled classroom, with free parking adjacent to the building. Other class will be added as they are developed. Find more information here.

Caravaggio at the Toledo Museum of Art

The Toledo Museum of Art will present four important paintings by Caravaggio in conversation with works from the Museum’s permanent collection. American Impressionist Society Exhibition

The Society was founded in 1998 and now has 2200 active members. Paintings by 269 members were selected for this show from 2,070 entries. You can views all the entries in their catalog.

Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Human Art?

According to research completed by a BGSU doctoral candidate, humans can correctly identify human-made art about half the time, similar to the rate of a coin toss. This groundbreaking exhibition is the first to explore Impressionist artist Edgar Degas’s representations of Parisian laundresses. These working-class women were a visible presence in the city, washing and ironing in shops open to the street or carrying heavy baskets of clothing. Their job was among the most difficult and poorly paid at the time, forcing some laundresses to supplement their income through sex work. The industry fascinated Degas throughout his long career, beginning in the 1850s and continuing until his final decade of work.

Encasing Natural Objects in Acrylics: Petals and Leaves

Numerous artists have asked about using acrylic mediums and gels to preserve dried organic materials, such as grasses and flowers. After one such phone conversation, we began our first test, which involved layering dry peony petals over and under thick layers of Soft Gel Gloss. The petals were from a blossom that dried in a vase and held its form for months on a work desk, the Soft Gel came from our testing room where a piece of glass offered the perfect substrate. The peony petal test began years ago and it continues to evolve. This sparked in us a desire to try more acrylics with other plant specimens.

This sculpture, on loan to our museum until December, provides a rare opportunity to see a monumental Koons piece up close. Jeffrey is an American artist recognized for his work dealing with popular culture and his sculptures depicting everyday objects, including balloon animals produced in stainless steel with mirror-finish surfaces. He lives and works in both New York City and his hometown of York, Pennsylvania.

Adventure with a glass pen

Sketching with a glass pen and India ink is fun and simple. Dip the pen in the ink and go; the decorative spirals near the tip act as a reservoir holding more ink than a metal dip pen. India ink makes a rich black mark; it is permanent but not water resistant. For my sketch of the praying mantis I combined watercolor with the ink drawing, and some of the ink lifted, helping to create a value shift in the image. The pen is fragile and will likely break if you drop it. Glass pens are available at Art Supply Depo.

A New Look at the Toledo Artists' Club

We are hanging artwork by our members and artists from the community on the south wall of the artists' club building. The 4 x 4 foot panels may be painted with any subject and will be rotated regulary. If you would like to paint a panel for the outdoor gallery contact the club.

Look Inside Our Building

This year volunteers have been busy remodeling the club. The classroom, office, and handicapped bathroom have been painted, and the bathroom completely remodeled. A wide-screen TV has been installed on the west wall of the classroom. The TV will be used to display art-related videos and to enhance our educational activities. If you have suggestions for the use of the TV consistent with the club's mission, contact the club.

New Instructor: Rebecca Booth

Rebecca holds a 1980 Bowling Green State University with majors in Creative Writing, Public Relations & Graphic Design. About her artwork, Rebecca says: "My work explores the joy that can be found in color, in nature, in animals and in life. I believe we are bombarded with too much negativity that’s why my work tends to be “pretty.” I want people to surround themselves with messages and art that uplifts versus pulls one down.

I have been painting in pastels for over 30 years and in acrylics for the past 5. I am influenced by the loose brush strokes of modern day painter Robert Burridge, the bold use of colors and
shapes by Andre Derain, Fauvist, plus the subtleties of the French Impressionists."

Rebecca also volunteers on the Marketing committee promoting the club's activities.

Welcome Laura Williams, Gallery and Studio Manager

Laura has joined our staff as Gallery and Studio manager. Let's make her feel at home as she pitches in to move our club forward.

Laura earned a Bachelor's degree with a Major in Art from Lourdes University, Sylvania, Ohio, in 2019, and continued in the Art Department Work Study program until 2023. Her duties included collaborating with professors and students on department needs, preparing flyers and paperwork for upcoming events and volunteer opportunities, helping hang various shows in gallery space, and using digital photography and photo editing techniques.

Joe Rudski: An Appreciation

Joe has been a devoted and hard-working President of the Toledo Artists' Club since January of 2000. As his Presidency draws to a close, let's review some of his many accomplishments:

Recognized the need to revamp our website and oversaw the redesign and development. The website has brought the Club into the 21st century, allowing our artwork to be viewed by anyone with a computer–anywhere. Members can now submit images for jurying in our shows, maintain their membership online, publicize their accomplishments, and keep up
with club news.

Obtained a Toledo and Lucas County Rescue grant of $5,000.00 for the Club.

Brought back the workshop program after a long hiatus, with two workshops in 2022 with nationally known instructors, as well as three workshops with noted Toledo Area artists for 2023.

Recruited new volunteers of the Board of Trustees.

Was instrumental in the re-design of our gallery.

Club membership has increased steadily during his tenure.

Established a series of Docent tours for club members at the Toledo Museum of Art, with Dr. David Guip, docent and former chair of the Department of Fine Art at the University of Toledo.

Waterville is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Roche De Boeuf Festival on September 23, 2023. As part of the festival fun, the Waterville Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Roche De Boeuf Festival T-shirt Design Contest. The winner of this contest will receive a $500 award.

Entries for the contest should be creative, original, and professional in appearance. Designs must be entered in a digital format either .jpg or .png.

The Art Supply Depo sponsors the Sylvania Plein Air event

The first 50 adults to register will receive amazing swag bags from the Depo containing free art materials worth much more than the registration fee. Later registrants will also receive cool swag bags, of lesser value. As of March 28, 10 artists had registered, so there were still 40 amazing swag bags up for grabs. The event is accessible; when you register, you may request having a volunteer help you get your supplies from your car to your painting site.

In addition to the cash awards, we'll also have lots of free art materials as honorable mention awards, including $300 worth of Arches Blocks, Sennelier Half Stick Soft Pastel Sets, Princeton Brush Bundles, etc.

Local businesses will also be providing cash purchase awards. The Depo is offering a $400 purchase award for the best representation of the shop. Art & About: Jim White Memorial Paint Out

This is the 10th annual plein air event sponsored by AWAAC to be held in downtown Waterville on June 22, 23 and 24. Art and About invites talented, local artists to paint outdoors throughout the historic city. The public is invited to watch the artists paint and interact with them as they work. Toledo Lucas County Rescue Grant

The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo, in partnership with the Lucas County Commissioners and the City of Toledo, is pleased to announce that the Toledo Artists' Club is included in the first round of organizational and artist grants from the Toledo-Lucas County Rescue Plan Grant program. This grant will help to support our operating costs through 2023. The award is a result of hard work by Joe Rudski, Linda Miller, and Joe Fisher. Read our letter thanking the Commissioners here .

In Memoriam, from Donlyn Meyers

When I got back into painting after 35 years of doing other things, I got to know painters around the Toledo Artist Club. I’m grateful I met these three fine artists before they passed away. Here are some words of advice they shared with me.

John Trumbull . I took some watercolor classes with John, in his basement studio. At one point we discovered how much we both liked to draw. John told me, “ “Everyone doesn’t get it. It’s all about the drawing. You can’t have really good paintings without good drawings.”

John Cook. I was admiring Mr. Cook’s work and told him I wanted to become a really good artist. He said paint every day and take all the classes and workshops you can. “Don’t ever think you know it all”

Virginia Kretz . I had just started to do plein air painting. I asked Virginia how she chose what to paint when there was so much to choose from outside. She was known for her gouache paintings of gardens. She said, “ Just pick the most joyous part.”

PanPastels, new twist on an old medium

The idea behind the development of PanPastel was to create a dry color medium that would respond like a fluid paint. Creating a new space between drawing and painting materials...We wanted to develop a material that would retain the characteristics that make the pastel medium special – its directness and purity of color – but make it function like paint. Our red headed friend is a reminder of the arrival of spring on March 20, called the spring equinox. Astronomically, in the Northern Hemisphere the spring equinox (also called the March equinox or vernal equinox across the globe) occurs when the Sun crosses the celestial equator going south to north. It’s called the “celestial” equator because it’s an imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator. Imagine standing on the equator; the Sun would pass directly overhead on its way north.
After the spring equinox, the Northern Hemisphere begins to tilt more toward the Sun, resulting in an increasing number of daylight hours, with earlier dawns and later sunsets.

Winslow Homer's Methods

Watercolors by Winslow Homer, Metropolitan Museum of Art

From the Smithsonian Magazine, May 2008:
"The frugal Winslow Homer was at his most parsimonious with words—especially when asked to reveal his aesthetic ideas or his methods of working. "I think it would probably kill me to have such a thing appear," he told a friendly writer who proposed a biography. The artist doggedly rebuffed all such overtures, left only a thin trail of correspondence and remained resolutely tight-lipped, particularly about his artistic views.

But his more than 700 watercolors provide scattered biographical and artistic clues. In the most recent investigation into his methods, mounted by the Art Institute of Chicago, a meticulous study focused on 25 watercolors. You can read more about this study here .

Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council

The Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council is proud to announce another series of classes coming to The Arts Garage this winter – "Landscape in Oil." Led by TAG resident artist Rick Dziak, Landscape in Oil will cover composition, color mixing, values and the direct approach to oil painting "wet into wet." The cost for all four classes is $175 per person or $150 for GPCAAC members and all take place at The Arts Garage. Find more information here .

Safe disposal of oil soaked rags

Most barn fires nowadays are caused by faults in electrical wiring or careless disposal of cigarettes. However, oil soaked rags improperly stored can spontaneously combust due to reaction of the oil with oxygen from the air, which generates heat. Historically this was a common cause of barn fires. For the artist, care in dealing with oil soaked rags will prevent any problems. Gamblin paint company has provided information about how to deal with rags used when cleaning up after oil painting.

Heralding the Holidays a great success

The event was held December 2, 3 and 4; our building was beautifully decorated, with laser lights illuminating the outside and a Holiday theme throughout. There was a steady stream of visitors all weekend; 735 people came to the club, and sales were brisk. Net income was $4,500, mostly from sale of merchandise, and then table rent from the vendors. All but one of the items in the silent auction sold.

We are especially grateful to Linda Miller and Joe Fisher for serving as cashiers, and to the many volunteers who donated items for sale, set up the club, and assisted during the event.

Opportunities for Artists

The Curmudgeon Art Expo is an important opportunity for an underappreciated group (male Findlay Art League members and non- members over 18 years) to show the work they have created. All submitted work will be displayed unless improperly prepared for presentation. Members may enter up to four pieces of art. Nonmembers may submit up to three pieces.

"From a curatorial standpoint, pastels occupy an ambivalent position. Perched between line and color, between the intimate touch of the artist and the ambition of the exhibition piece, pastels really aren’t either/or but both/and. On one hand, many works in pastel—sumptuous eighteenth-century portraits, for example, or Degas’s richly elaborated scenes of dancers—were plainly conceived as paintings, meant to rival contemporary oils in their variety of color and touch, their high degree of finish, and even their scale." Donlyn is taking in donations of 5x7 inch paintings that she will mat with plastic sleeves to sell all year at the Toledo Artist Club. They did especially well at Heralding the Holidays the last few years. Take a few minutes and make a fun little painting. It's like donating a ten dollar bill but using your talent. You can give your donations to myself, Janet Wharry, or leave in the donation box at in the classroom at the club.

Inktober

Inktober is a challenge open to all artists, submitting either one drawing a day during October, or one a week for 52 weeks. This is a casual and fun experience, a chance to sharpen your drawing skills. Find more information here .

Studio Latus Boreale

Studio Latus Boreale in Ann Arbor has long-pose figure events, good for development of oil painting, drawing and sculpting. SLB is a spacious studio with generous north light from high windows. Artists may attrend 3-hour events with a model; charge is $20. Reservations and advance payment are required (by PayPal), no drop-ins. Format is almost always one long pose, nude. The annual Ohio Watercolor exhibit, Watercolor Ohio, is available to view here . Martin Chappuies (OWS) received the John Trumbull Memorial Award, and Thomas Sorrell's painting, City to City was also accepted and will be in the Travelling exhibit.

Great Lakes Pastel Society National Online Show 2022

All the accepted paintings from this premier show may be viewed online ; Sally Marti's "Wetland Moment, was included in the show.

18th Century Pastels

Currently there is an exhibition of eighteenth-Century Pastels at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. It may by inconvenient to hop over to LA for the show, but several of the paintings and descriptions are at Pastel Today . Pastels, especially portraits, were very popular in the 18th century.

Bowling Green State University Art Galleries is hosting the 15th Annual Northwest Ohio Community Art Exhibition

Now OH celebrates the talents of regional artists in a professional setting. The show opens Friday, June 24 at 7 p.m. with a gallery talk by the award juror, and a reception with light refreshments. Located at the BGSU Fine Arts Center, the exhibition is free and open to the public. Artists who display their work at the exhibition are eligible to win up to $2,000 in cash prizes and gift certificates. Artists of all skill levels 16 years of age and older are encouraged to enter. Online registration is open until June 15. The exhibition prospectus is here .

The festival occurs July 30, 2022, from 10am-6pm, on the south shore of Devils Lake, about 50 miles from Toledo in the Irish Hills of Michigan. We are expecting 80 vendors; the attendance in 2021 was 5000+. The entry fee is $125, however, Toledo Artists' Club members will receive a discount of $50. Rose show at the Toledo Botanical Garden June 11 & 12

Bowling Green Arts Council and Downtown BG will partner to sponsor the 30th Annual Art Walk, this year live and in person! John was a master watercolor painter, long time member of the club, art teacher and served on the Board of Trustees. To honor his memory the club is establishing a John Trumbull award, selected by our juror, for a watercolor in an upcoming exhibit at the club. Contributions for the award may be directed to the club .

Visual arts and cognition: participate in a research study

From an email I received yesterday from Mariya:
"Dear Paul,

My name is Mariya Vodyanyk and I’m a PhD student and Plein Air enthusiast at the University of California, Irvine interested in studying the relationship between visual art and cognition for my second-year research paper milestone. Currently, I’m conducting an online 1-2 hour study and would like to invite you to participate. You can find out more and sign up for the study here .
If you have time in the coming week or two to participate, I would greatly appreciate your support. This project will provide a path for future research in developing creative arts-based cognitive training programs and interventions."

Water Wonderland of Michigan Art Exhibition

Third in the Series “Beautiful Bountiful Michigan “, River Raisin National Battlefield Park, Monroe, Michigan. We wish to invite all of you to enter your art in our next Art Exhibition. For 2022 the theme is Water Wonderland of Michigan. All Art must depict a named lake, pond, river or stream in Michigan. You can find more information, and the Prospectus here .

Versatility for all: an art exhibit by Aaron S. Bivins

Aaron S. Bivins works primarily in acrylic, oil and watercolor and explores other media. His subjects include landscapes, seascapes, florals, portraits, animals and homes. “By not becoming comfortable with where I am and taking chances when I paint, I will continue to grow,” says Bivins. He intends for viewers to “see” the portrayal with new eyes by using values, color and light.

The exhibit is hosted at the Motherhouse of the Immaculate Heart of Mary convent in Monroe, Michigan. Because of the pandemic, the exhibit is not open to the public. However, you can view a virtual tour of the exhibit.

National Creativity Week, January 24 to 30, 2022

Crayola Creativity Week is a free program for schools and homes around the world. Designed to celebrate children’s creativity and the joy it brings to teaching and learning any subject. Donlyn Meyers will be watching the club on Saturday and Sunday, January 29 and 30, from 1 to 4 pm. She will be hosting activities with crayons and coloring pages for adults and kids. Many other interesting projects are being provided by the Crayola Corporation for us to try. Stop in and play. Bring some kids too.

This 15th century treatise on artists' materials is in the public domain, and can be read for free from Google books, here . This is how brushes were made in the 15th century:

"The bristle brushes are made in this style. First get bristles from a white hog, for they are better than the black ones; but see that they come from a domestic hog. And make up with them a large brush into which should go a pound of these bristles; and tie it to a good-sized stick with a knot. And this brush should be limbered up by whitewashing walls, and wetting down walls where you are going to plaster; and limber it up until these bristles become very supple. Then undo this brush, and make the divisions of it as you want, to make a brush of any variety...Then make little sticks of ... wood and tie up each little bundle with double waxed thread."

2021 Athena Juried Exhibition

Best of Show, Mary Weiss, Women Series: Movers and Shakers, ceramics

The 2021 Athena Art Society Annual Juried Exhibition is being held in the Gallery at the Toledo Lucas County Main Public Library, on view until December 31, 2022. Forty-four works of art created by 25 Athena artists are in the show.

The Athena Art Society is one of the oldest women's art organizations in the country, founded in 1903 to assist and encourage women in all branches of the Fine Arts. Athena continues to promote and develop the visual arts and stimulate community participation.

Aaron Bivins Versatility Exhibit

Aaron is exhibiting his paintings in acrylics, oils and watercolors through January 2022 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Mother house in Monroe Michigan. Although the Mother House is not open to the public currently because of locally increased COVID infection, a virtual Powerpoint tour is anticipated. A link to the virtual exhbit will be provided when available.

November 2021 News and Notes

This major fund raising event for the club is occurring December 3, 4 and 5. Volunteers are needed for a variety of activities; for more information, or to sign up to go here . Also, we are offering tables for rent to craftsman (anyone can rent a table here ). There will be a raffle of large, donated art work, and the sale of small (less than 8 x 10 inches, matted or on canvas.) donated art work as well. We are asking artists to donate the income from the smaller work, but if they prefer, they can give 25% of the sale price to the club and retain 75%. An inventory form for small art work sales is here . The more paintings we can sell, the better. Bring your donations to the club during regular hours, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 4 pm, preferably at least one week before the event starts (December 3rd). Download and fill out the inventory form and bring it with you. Be sure each item you donate is labeled with your name and email or phone number. Thank you!

Members Meeting October 28, 2021

Joe Rudski presided over a lively meeting, with 24 in attendance, including two new members, and two visitors. Joe presented a mentorship program, where experienced members would volunteer to mentor new members. A signup sheet for mentors was distributed, along with sign up sheets for volunteers to open the club on weekends.

Docent tours for artists' club members at the Toledo Museum of Art are in the planning stage. A sign up sheet was distributed for interested members; to add your name, contact Joe .

To assist our members who have difficulty entering online shows, two weeks before we begin accepting entries for each show, Joe Rudski and Joe Fisher will present a free workshop helping attendees to photograph their work, and assisting with other aspects of entering the shows. You can find a link to a previous similar workshop here . Dates and times will be emailed to the membership.

From November to April, the group is meeting for breakfast at 8 am at the Rocket Cafe, 2023 N Reynolds Road. At 9:30 the group will paint at the Toledo Artists' Club. Opportunity: Findlay Plein Air Exhibit

The Findlay Art League will host a Plein Air Art Show during December. The juror for the show is Dr. Kyle Park, a student at Columbus College of Art and Design, who works in watercolor and pastel. Three of his pastel paintings were included in the Ohio Plein Air Exhibition at the Columbus Art Museum in 2017. One of his watercolor paintings was accepted into the Ohio Watercolor Society's Watercolor Ohio 2021 exhibit. Prizes to be awarded are First Place, $150; Second Place, $100; Third Place, $75, and two Honorable Mentions. November. 23 and 24, noon to 5:30 pm, at the Findlay Art League, 117 W Crawford St, Findlay, OH. The show opens at noon, Saturday, November 27 in conjunction with Small Business Saturday. Come meet new members, hear updates about recent activities and plans for the future, and socialize. If you haven’t visited the club in a while you can view the current People and Portrait Show in the newly renovated gallery, and Carol Sicha’s mural on the east face of our building.

Opportunities for Artists

The Art on Market Shoppes boasts 20 local artists displaying art in various styles, mediums and sizes. There is something for everyone and every budget. They are also the most affordable place for local artists to consign their pieces. Art on the Market Shoppes are currently seeking artwork for the fall and winter season. The shoppes are located at 201 S. Erie Street at Market Street, adjacent to and accessible from Libbey Glass Factory Outlet. Email them here .

A month long celebration and exploration of the arts. Form and function, color and texture, fragrance and film, and the stories that inspire it all! Our resident artists will feature unique art for sale including paintings, lamps, candles, photography and more.

Jim Zalewsk i plans a special ARTober Project, 31 Days of Expression at his studio at "Art on Market Shoppes". He will create an abstract expressionist painting every day in October as part of our ARTober celebration. His focus is expressionism based on empathy for the artist's struggle. The daily paintings will be based upon artist friend's stories. The goal is to both raise awareness of hardships and pay tribute to accomplishments. This project is open to all artists, poets, performers, and musicians who currently or formerly created art in the Toledo area . In 50–200 words, tell Jim about your art, your struggles, why you keep pushing, and what you ultimately want to happen.
The resulting pieces will be on display along with name, story, photo, and contact information. Email your story to Jim here .

Athena's 2021 Juried Art Exhibition

Athena's 2021 Juried Art Exhibition will be at the Toledo Lucas County Public Library in their Main Library’s new gallery on the first floor from Monday, November 1 to Friday, December 31

Reception: Wednesday, November 3, 4 - 6 pm (all attendees required to wear a mask per the Library). No food or drink allowed at reception.

LIbary Hours: M-Th 9:30 am - 7:30 pm, F-S 9:30 am - 6 pm, Closed Sunday.

Celebrate World Toilet Day November 19 (seriously)

From Amy Sider , Showroom Manager for Waterhouse bath & kitchen studio in Perrysburg:

To raise awareness (and just to have a little fun too...) we're going to have a contest!
10 toilets. 10 artists. Toilets must remain intact and working, but may be painted, glazed and/or adorned however the artist sees fit. We will provide the basic white 2-piece toilet to be used as the canvas; artists will supply all labor and materials.

Toilets will be dispensed October 15 and must be returned to our showroom by Halloween.

All of our entries will be displayed in the showroom windows and vestibule.

Online and in-person voting will run from November 1-18, and we'll announce the winner on World Toilet Day, November 19.

Then, we're going to set up an online silent auction that will run November 20-27for the ten toilets; the proceeds will be donated to charity (TBD).

Winning bids will be announced on Monday, November 29th.

Plein Air Painters: Note change in location for Sept. 7

Sept. 7 New location: Orleans Park in Perrsyburg. 655 Maumee Western Reserve Rd.

Driving over the Maumee/Perrysburg Bridge, going to Perrysburg side, the park in on your left. You can see the parking lot which is down and large. You can see the skyline of Perrysburg plus the river and islands.

Small artworks for sale at the Toledo Artists' Club

Club members may bring small, matted, unframed art work to the club for sale (acrylics and oils do not need to be matted). Art should be enclosed in a clear plastic envelope, or shrink-wrapped. Each item should be labeled with the artist's name and the price.

Bring items on Tuesdays or Thursdays between 1 and 4 pm. (closing 2 pm on Sept 9). For more information contact the club.

Everyone Welcome. One goal is to provide an opportunity for folks who work during the day to be involved at the club and get to know other artists, share some wine (BYOB) and art conversation.

A new interesting, lighted still life will be set up every week. Seasonal themes might be fun. Artists favoring any style will have subject matter to try. You may also bring your own projects and images of any subject to work on.

Bring your own paints, any media, and paint with other artists. Oil painters welcome but no turpentine. No instruction or materials will be provided.

A show and tell session will be held the first week of the month with the goal of receiving feedback from other artists on your work. Show off a success and get help solving a problem painting.

Cost is $5 per person cash, to cover the cost of using the Artists' Club.

A visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art

In Memoriam

Virginia Kretz, longtime member and active volunteer in the Toledo Artists' Club, the Toledo Women's Art League, and the Athena Society, passed away August 10, 2021 at the age of 91.

Reception July 11, 2 to 4 pm for the grand opening of our renovated gallery.

Photo of the gallery during renovation. Since this photo the baseboards have been replaced. The renovation is now complete. The entry way has also been repainted and the floor there replaced.

At the reception the awards for the America exhibition will be announced. This exhibition will be displayed on our website, and the artwork will be hung in the gallery as well. This is the first live exhibition since BP (before pandemic). Light refreshments will be served; please come and bring a guest.

The fruition of two years of planning, with the support of the Metroparks and our
Arts Commission Grant. Carol was a professional muralist until her retirement, and a long time member of the club. She designed the mural, selected the colors, and is creating the art work.
Her original paintings have won several awards in shows at the Toledo Artists' Club.

Shelby Stoots, new member of the Board of Trustees

Toledo Artists' Club

Shelby took over the leadership position at the Terhune Gallery at Owens Community College in September 2020 after working three years at American Frame in Maumee. The Otsego High School graduate earned a bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University in 3D Studies, specializing in sculpture with a minor in art management.

Her recent activities for the club include the direction and management of the renovation/upgrade of the TAC Clubhouse Gallery.

Michael graduated from Bowling Green University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing. He has been teaching painting and drawing at the Toledo Museum of Art for 11 years. He also teaches art at Northwest State Community College. You can learn more about Michael here .

Toledo Museum of Art planning new gallery

The Toledo blade announced that the art museum is will open a gallery devoted to exhibits by local artists. The gallery will hang 20 to 30 paintings by an artist for 12 weeks, and the paintings may be for sale. The museum intends to select artists whose work aligns thematically or formally with the ongoing featured exhibition. The gallery will open after the space is renovated. Find more information here .

Elaine's Little Picassos

After a long hiatus because of the pandemic, Elaine is resuming her Saturday class on September 18, 2021. This long-running mixed media class is held 10 to 11 AM, at the Toledo Artists' club, for children ages 6 to 11; cost is $7/class. To register, email Elaine.

Mary Jane Erard invites all current and future students in any of her classes in Northwest Ohio, to show their artwork in a window display at The Shops at Fallen Timbers, Maumee, Ohio,suite 1350, which is the former store called "Learning Express, Toys". This is the same suite where she holds her classes at Fallen Timbers. It's a beautiful space with excellent lighting. Parking is available near by. There is great foot traffic and many people will see the art. The opportunity will be available as long as Fallen Timbers allows.. Larry E. Edinger passed away on June 24, 2021. Larry was the husband of Faye Edinger, long time member of the Toledo Artists' club, and a member of the Board of Trustees.

The Toledo Artists Club’s next online and live gallery show is the “America” show. Celebrate our American heritage, our beautiful country, our parades, veterans, caregivers, the flag and patriotic fireworks. We will begin accepting entries May 28, 2021. Deadline to complete online submission of artwork is June 23, 2021. The prospectus and application are available here .

The Terhune Art Gallery will be premiering our Artist in Residence Program this summer.

Artist in Residence: Beth Genson.

The Owens Community College Department of Fine and Performing Arts welcomes Beth Genson as the first Artist in Residence. Genson will be featuring her solo exhibit "The Heavens and Earth" and offering a variety of "The Art of Encaustic" classes to students, faculty, staff and the community during her time in residency. Genson is a graduate of Bowling Green State University with degrees in Fine Art and Teaching. She recently completed an Advanced Teaching Encaustics course at R&F Paints in New York.

The Art of Encaustic Classes

Whether you are an artist or just want to have fun, you can't help but be inspired as you discover the process of applying hot wax and pigment along with other materials to create abstract or representational works of art. All equipment, tools and supplies for these classes are included in the cost. Bring an apron to cover your clothing and wear closed-toe shoes. Must be 18+ and sign a release as you will be working with hot wax.

This is a reminder (Please alert your committee chairs) that:

All signage used within park grounds must be preapproved by Steve Stockford .
Signs within the park may only be posted the day of the sale or event, removed at the end of the sale, and reset the next day if applicable.
Signs at either end of Elmer are acceptable, and may say Artist's Village, 5403 Elmer Drive, Artists' Club (or organization of choice), in any configuration.
It is not okay to include TBG, Toledo Botanical Garden, or Metroparks on a sign.

The intent is to avoid a "neighborhood garage sale" look.

When in doubt, ask me or Steve for clarification.

Gallery Remodeling Project underway

Using funds from our Arts Commission pandemic grant and an anonymous donation, Joe Rudski and Shelby Stoots, Gallery Design Coordination, have been supervising the remodeling of our gallery at the Toledo Artists' Club. The old wall covering was removed, the walls repaired and painted, and a new hanging system installed. The floor is being stripped and polished, and the baseboards will be painted and reinstalled.

D uring the summer we anticipate that the Metroparks will repair and repaint the exterior of our building. When that is accomplished, Carol Sicha has volunteered to design and supervise the painting of a mural on the front of our building. These photos show the repainted gallery and a close up of the hanging system.

Highlights from the minutes:

The Toledo Potters Guild, pending final approval, is planning to have a pottery sale Mother's Day Weekend. Contact Nancy Grindulus if you have questions.

August 14, 2021 is the date set for the Art in the Garden day, an event that demonstrates art in all its forms, from artist demonstrations to sidewalk chalk, music, interactive and make-and-take opportunities, displays and exhibits. It is not a sales event in focus, though sales are not prohibited. The theme will be "insecta botanica". There have been conversations about a mural at the Artist's club, an art installation and/or raku firing at the Potters Guild, open house events and temporary sculpture projects. Herb society suggested tours of butterfly pollinators. Michelle Kipplen is looking into sidewalk chalk artists. This event still needs a chair. Kelly Savino (as past chair) will be happy to assist whoever takes on the role. Christie Clark is clearing the scheduling with Corinne.

Crosby Festival of the Arts will be held this summer, hosted by Toledo Grows.

Imagine our Parks Show

April 15 to June 15, 2021

The Toledo Artists Club’s next online show is Imagine our Parks. Celebrate the beautiful Metroparks in Northwest Ohio. Media may include, but are not limited to, paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture, and jewelry. You do not have to be a member of the club to participate. Artists are invited to submit digital images (.JPGs) of up to 5 original works of art on our website at https://www.toledoartistclub.com/call-for-entries. We will begin accepting entries March 12, 2021.

Deadline to complete online submission of artwork is April 8, 2021.

Awards will be selected by an experienced, independent juror:

• Best of Show $150

• First place $100

• Second place $75

• Third place $50

• Four Honorable Mention Certificates

• The People’s Choice Award. Visitors to the online exhibition may vote for their three favorite works of art. The artist whose work receives the most votes will receive a virtual Blue Ribbon, to be announced in the July Sketchpad.

Good news! Heralding the Holidays will be held live December 3, 4 and 5, 2021. This event has proven to be an outstanding fund raiser for the Toledo Artists' Club, with the potential to bring in as much as $3,000. The sooner the club begins to prepare for the event, the better. We will need a chair, or two co-chairs. Please volunteer. For more information about the responsibilities of the chair, contact the club.

DAKOTA ART PASTELS announces its second annual Soft Pastel Only Juried Competition to promote and advance the creativity and possibilities of this unique painting medium. Apply for this show on their website ; deadline is March 17 2021.

The Crosby Festival is an annual event held at the Toledo Botanical Garden at the end of June. After a year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Festival will be held live this year. Deadline to apply has been extended to March 22. Apply here .

The Ohio Watercolor Society hosts a prestigious annual state-wide juried exhibition of watercolors. Deadline for the current show, Watercolor Ohio 2021, is March 27, 2021. You may apply here .

Freeze Warning

Well it looks like mother nature is getting even with us for the mild start to the winter we just witnessed. Subzero temperatures are expected by Monday so I or one of my staff will be checking out the facilities for any major issues. We may be turning on a couple water sources in the buildings that have had problems in the past to help keep pipes from bursting. If you see any water trickling out of your faucets please do not turn them off. Have a great weekend and stay safe

Toledo Artists' Club receives $5,000 Grant

The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo awarded more than 200 pandemic relief grants to 14 small cultural organizations and 190 individual artists.The Toledo and Lucas County Arts Relief Grant Program was set up by the arts organization, and funded with $200,000 from the City of Toledo and $250,000 from the Lucas County Commissioners. Officials set up the program after citing large losses of income to the arts community from canceled events and closures during the coronavirus pandemic. The following organizations received funding through the program, totaling $105,000: Sofia Quintero Art and Cultural Center; BeInstrumental Foundation; Toledo Repertoire Theatre; Clarence Smith Community Chorus; Lott Industries Shared Lives Studio; Toledo Integrated Media Education; African American Legacy Project of Northwest Ohio; Collingwood Arts Center; Sequestered Art Space, Inc./Hands On Studio at Toledo Botanical Garden; Anthony Wayne Area Arts Commission; Nuestra Gente Community Projects, Inc.; Madd Poets Society, Inc.; New Works Writers Series, and the Toledo Artists’ Club.

Wayne Thiebaud exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art

A sweeping retrospective of a legendary American artist’s career, Wayne Thiebaud 100: Paintings, Prints and Drawings, will open at Toledo Museum of Art on Feb. 6, running through May 2, 2021. In celebration of Thiebaud’s 100th birthday in 2020, the exhibition brings together works from the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California, as well as works from the Thiebaud family, many of which have never been publicly on view.

Ed Kennedy will jury entries and awards for the Artist's Choice show opening online February 15, 2021.

I hope that each of you enjoyed a very happy holiday season; welcome to 2021. I sense the anticipation we all have that the new year will bring much happier times and renewed artistic vigor. With our new website, the Sketchpad will focus on new and recent events, updates on existing shows, and links to opportunities for artists. As in the past, you are invited to submit your news about art. Contact the Sketchpad editor to get started.

Positive news:

In December, the new Toledo Artists Club website was rolled out. The website committee worked hard and produced an excellent product. Among other things, the website now allows us to host online shows. Our first online show is the Holiday Show, which features103 entries from 36 artists.

On December 17, 2020, we applied for a grant from the Toledo and Lucas County Art Relief Grant Fund. We hope the Arts Commission looks favorably on our grant application. Receiving this grant would be a tremendous boost to our club’s financial position and give the club the opportunity to recover the losses that we experienced in 2020.

Our next online show is an Artists' Choice show, which will go live February 15, 2021. This will be our first juried show since March 2020. We look forward to seeing your works in this show. Let's give the online world another example of the artistic excellence we have in this community. We begin accepting entries January 11, 2021; the prospectus is posted under
Call for Entries.

Shelby Stoots, Gallery Director, Terhune Gallery, Owens Community College, announces Poverty Hiding in Plain Sight, an exhibit open to all artists, based on the book, Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth, by Sarah Smarsh . With this exhibit we want to create a visual learning experience for our students, faculty, staff, and the community at large that addresses the issue of poverty in the Greater Toledo Area. Poverty appears in many different forms and we want to bring awareness, start conversations, and assist in the movement to end poverty through art and the talented artists in our community.

Prospectus for Poverty Hiding in Plain Sight

The exhibition is open to any artist in the Greater Toledo Area.

Any size and medium of artwork can be submitted including two-dimensional, three-dimensional, digital, and installation works.

5-10 individual works of art can be submitted.

Video entries are limited to a total of 3 per artist.

Accepted Works

Artwork submissions should be ready to install with complete instructions for installation if necessary. Works with unusual or complex installation may require artist assistance during installation.

All artwork must be hand-delivered to the Owens Center for Fine and Performing Arts at the Walter E. Terhune Art Gallery or the Owens Findlay-Area Campus Library by Monday, January 25 ^th .

Accepted artwork must remain in the exhibit for the duration of the show.

Pick-up for artwork will be at Owens Center for Fine and Performing Arts at the Walter E. Terhune Art Gallery or the Owens Findlay-Area Campus Library on April 5 ^th – 9 ^th , unless special arrangements are made. If another person will be picking up the artwork he or she must have the artist’s written permission.

Release of Liability

The Walter E. Terhune Art Gallery and the Owens Findlay-Area Campus Library are not responsible for the loss or damage of artwork. Artwork will be handled in a professional manner, monitored during gallery hours, and a security system will be activated outside gallery hours.

Sale of Artwork

An artist agreement form must be submitted by the artist before the artwork delivery date or upon delivery. The artist must state in the inventory sheet the artwork retail price or not for sale (NFS). Please note that the price of an accepted entry may not be changed. The gallery will not take any commission from the sale of artwork. The Gallery Director will act as a liaison in handling the purchase of artwork and the sales price will be remitted to the artist after the close of the exhibition. The Gallery Director will make arrangements with buyer for pick-up or shipping. All sold work must remain at the Walter E. Terhune Art Gallery or the Owens Findlay-Area Campus Library for the duration of the exhibit.

There will be opportunities to deliver artwork at the Owens Toledo-Area Campus and Owens Findlay-Area Campus. Exact times for artwork delivery will be sent out on Monday, Jan. 11 ^th .

Toledo Artists’ Club Virtual Holiday Show 2020

To help introduce our completely renovated website, we are hosting a completely online (virtual) exhibition in time for the upcoming holidays. Members are invited to submit digital images (jpegs) of up to three original works of art; entries will be exhibited on our website from December 1, 2020 to January 31, 2021 and promoted on our Facebook page. Artwork will be available for purchase through the website. Artists will set the price for their work as usual, and the club will retain a 25% commission. It will be the artists’ responsibility to arrange delivery of sold work.

A virtual Blue Ribbon and heartfelt congratulations will be given to the artist chosen as the winner of The People’s Choice Award. Visitors to the online exhibition may vote for their three favorites after touring the show. The artist whose work receives the most votes will receive the the virtual Blue Ribbon. Encourage everyone you know to come see the show and cast their vote! We will announce the results of the voting in early February in The Sketchpad .

For the Spring 2021 Semester the Terhune Gallery at Owens community College is planning an exhibition based a book titled "Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth." It is about a woman who grew up in Kansas in the 1980s and 1990s. The focus of her memoir is on the class divide in our country and the myths about people thought to be less because they earn less. With this exhibit we want to create a visual learning experience for our students, faculty, staff, and the community at large, that addresses the issue of poverty in the Greater Toledo Area. Poverty appears in many different forms and we want to bring awareness, start conversations, and assist in the movement to end poverty through art and the talented artists in our community.

We are looking for local artists in the Greater Toledo Area to participate and submit artwork that relates to this theme. Artwork will be displayed on the Owens Findlay-Area Campus Library and the Walter E. Terhune Art Gallery located at the Owens Toledo-Area Campus. The exhibit will be on display from February 5-April 2, 2021.

Owens Community College will be hosting different activities during this exhibition which includes an author visit, lectures, and fundraising events. It is free to display at the gallery spaces and we do not take any percentage from artwork sales. The prospectus is attached with this Sketchpad. We are excited that the new Educational Center will be open; the educational displays are going to be terrific.
