Supply list for Watercolors

June 10 to July 1,  2026

June 10 | Using shadows to enhance a landscape painting

In the Banana Shed, the shadows surround the focus. Shadows placed imaginatively in an image will aid in creating a good composition. Decide where you want the light direction; never mind the sun. Shadows can anchor an object on the ground, show the texture and the high and low areas of a surface, and be as long as you wish. Remember, reality is overrated. Plan the shadows in your 3 value sketch.

June 17 | Pastels for the summer

Soft pastels provide bright, intense colors and rich, deep darks making them especially useful for the color and light of the summer. Bring soft pastels if you have them; I will share mine. Also, pastel paper, either a sheet or a pad, 11. X 14. Canson is a good beginners grade. Also bring paper towels.

June 24 | Working on a dark ground.

A medium value gray paper unifies a picture, leaving the artist to add lighter and darker values. Bring a sketchbook such as an 11 x 14 Strathmore 400 Series Toned Sketch Wirebound Pads, a white pastel or pastel pencil, or titanium white watercolor, and a few sticks of charcoal.

July 1 | Working from a photo.

Using a photograph as a subject lets you work inside in bad weather, and preserves images that you like. On the other hand, photos lose some of the color in a scene, may add to many details, and often make shadows too dark. Bring a photo you like and your paints.

CLASSES  WITH    JOAN   PEARSE

Joan Pearse will be offering monthly classes throughout the year.

Instructor: Joan Pearse

Joan Pearse has been teaching arts and creative classes for more than 35 years.

She received an Associate of Art, Bachelor of Fine Art and Bachelor of Art Education from The Ohio State University where she received summa cum laude honors. While she was attending courses in Art Education, the program was ranked third in the nation. She also received top honors for a Master of Public Administration degree from Cleveland State University. She recently took part in a photography course at the Columbus College of Art and Design. In addition to her teaching experiences and education, she also holds three active certifications working with older adults.

Her love of teaching is only rivaled by her love of being creative herself. She enjoys getting lost in and taking photos in nature. She is a published artist in calendars, (including the coveted front cover), on social platforms, in magazines, in promotional items online and in brochures, in park advertisements, window art, T-shirt art, and in a coloring book. Her art is for sale in nature stores, galleries, and more.

Joan has received scholarships, honors and awards for her art, photography and education. She has been honored with Best of Show, Peoples Choice, Best Body of Work honors and more. She just recently participated in the Ohio Arts Council juried show: Fine Art and Feathers, and a photo was published in Birds and Blooms magazine.

She loves taking unique photos in nature. She enjoys creating mixed media art, collage, sculpture, graphics, realistic drawing and abstract art. Being creative is as important as is breathing. She also enjoys exploring many mediums. She has taught craft classes, glass art classes for more than 20 years, sculpture, spiritual art, calligraphy, paper arts, and more. She ran a craft group that sold handmade items at her last position that earned the organization upwards of $180,000 from 2010 until her departure in 2025.

She knows that art is important and vital to communities and she would love to share her love of art in the Toledo community that she now calls home.
