Grand Rapids Bridge–Edward Marks
This piece is outstanding in every way. Strong composition and handling of color, light and shadow unite in this classic oil painting. It is perfect.
FIRST PLACE
Side Cut Canal Lock–William Horvath
The exceptional luminosity of Side cut Canal Lock is what makes this photograph a standout. The combined textures of the stone blocks of the lock, flowing water and foliage unite for a strong perspective, and the balance of light and shadow create this luminous composition.
SECOND PLACE
Meandering Creek–Nancy Honaker
Strong diagonals lead the eye down this Meandering Creek with its variety of textures. The water represented is agitated motion, and the color is well balanced with the cool blues of the water against the warm reds and oranges of the leaves. This drawing emits so much movement in the flowing water and autumn leaves blown into the fallen logs.
THIRD PLACE
Bunnie–Michael Hill
A variety of unique brush strokes create fur, leaves, sticks, and rocks in Bunnie. The composition creates an interesting frame around the animal with the arching branch over the head and the striated leaves encircling the lower body. It moves the viewer's eye around the rabbit while holding attention within the image.
Birding Trails Series 3-Cheryl Phillips
This triptych is a grouping of vibrant collages which balance shapes, colors, textures, and imagery into an imaginative whole. Each piece can stand on its own, and taken together they offer a strong panorama.
Secor Park Lupine-Paula Davis
Secor Park Lupine is a study in contrasts. The color against the black background is well-handled. The foreground is a strong horizontal of warm colors. The background is the vertical wall of trees rendered in cool colors. The underlying black substrate has been used as the unifying element for a dramatic effect.
Prarie at Blue Creek Metropark-Sally Marti
A limited color palette is skillfully handled in this piece. Colors from the floral foreground are repeated in the sky for a unified effect. It is a well-balanced composition with just enough diagonals to hold the strong horizontals and veritcals together.
Fire Hydrant-Andrea Clarkson
Fire Hydrant is an exceptional use of color. It evokes the coldness of winter, balancing the complements of red and green. The red of the hydrant and the three cardinals keep the eye circling around the composition. There is motion, even though only one of the birds is in fllight.
