OBSERVATIONS BY OUR JUROR,
DR. DAVID GUIP

The overall impression of the exhibition of the Toledo Artists' Club America Exhibition was limited by the fact that the exhibition was a virtual juried exhibition from the organization’s website. Certainly, subtleties of techniques–particularly in watercolor painting, texture in mixed media and nuances in photography–are difficult to interpret because they are digital reproductions. But overall, the quality of artistic interpretations is to be commended especially the diversity of media and thoughtful presentation of the concept.

BEST OF SHOW

Aspens–William Horvath

Juror's comment

The photograph Aspens by William Horvath so reminiscent of the work of Ansel Adams and is visually appealing especially the contrast in value and trees in the composition. His use of strong black values in the sky enhance the structure of the Aspen trees in the composition and formalize his expression.

FIRST PLACE

Lakeside Cottage–Kay Kocher

Juror's comment

Kay Kocher’s Lakeside Cottage demonstrates a strong understanding of the extremely difficult medium of watercolor. She has mastered the use of depicting light in combination with the foliage surrounding the buildings and strong composition.

SECOND PLACE

An American Treasure–Kenneth Jackson

Juror's comment

Kenneth Jackson’s Prismacolor drawing An American Treasure reveals an artist who understands the importance of drawing as a foundation to an effective composition. His attention to detail is to be admired!

THIRD PLACE

American As Apple Pie–Joseph Rudski

Juror's comment

The painting by Joe Rudski–American As Apple Pie–reflects the traditional values one might envision of Americana. The apple pie and apples suggest the work of Wayne Thiebaud and his effective use of texture in the composition which was recently displayed in the exhibition “Wayne Thiebaud 100” at Toledo Museum of Art.

HONORABLE MENTION

Ohio Sky–Paul Brand

Juror's comment

The charcoal drawing Ohio Sky by Paul Brand in a format traditional of a rural countryside one thinks of Andrew Wyeth and his interpretation of the light on a summer day. The elements implied in the flora and fauna reflect the relaxed environment we a wish would be found in our Covid environment.

HONORABLE MENTION

Moon Glow–Gina Wolfrum

Juror's comment

Gina Wolfrum’s Moon Glow is a mixed media composition that reflects the careful use of texture and reflective light in a composition designed to capture the force and power of water running through a secluded forest. Value is used to support the overall composition in a highly effective manner.

HONORABLE MENTION

Zion National Park–Paula Davis

Juror's comment

Paula Davis’ pastel Zion National Park–so typical of the Taos Ten interpretation of landscapes in the Southwest–is refreshing. Her use of color as an expressive component is typical of the color in the Southwest in locations such as Sedona, Arizona.

HONORABLE MENTION

Forever Corn–Sally Marti

Juror's comment

Sally Marti’s Forever Corn is a striking composition which is reinforced by the direction, use of color, perspective, and point of view. An unusual work of art that has a new and refreshing use of content.
