BEST OF SHOW

Behind the Lighthouse–Janealla Killebrew

Juror's comment

This painting is well designed. It invites you into the scene through the use of strong verticals, overlapping shapes and patterns and an understanding of light, shadow and reflected light. The placement of people at the focal point draws you in but does not detract from exploring all the trees and rocks. The subtle use of color only adds to the scene and its inviting nature. Well done.

FIRST PLACE

The Maintenance Bay–Thomas Sorrell

Juror's comment

I truly get a sense of a energy and activities you would associate with a maintenance bay. The artist has a good sense of color and color temperature, utilizing warm and cools to add interest without loosing the larger mass values. The brush strokes add to the energy of the painting along with a good variety of lost and found edges.

SECOND PLACE

Seeking–Anne Abate

Juror's comment

This painting is essentially a two color painting. Yet, the artist is able to convey so much more than just two colors. There is an abundance of lost and found edges which add mystery and helps direct the eye around the painting. The painting effectively utilizes the rule of thirds placing the focal point in the upper left portion, but generate interest via values and edges to keep my eye moving around the painting.

THIRD PLACE

On Waters Edge– Martin Chappuies

Juror's comment

The artist utilizes patterns of the rocks to help guide the viewer around the painting. There are active passages in the rocks which contrast with the less active passages of the water and river bottom. There is a good use of light and shadow in conjunction with warm and cool colors. The limited palette effectively creates a strong color harmony.
