Workshop Brief
- Technique fundamentals (things Chris wishes he knew 30 years ago)
- The first half-hour of a painting (make it or break it)
- Values (why value is more important than color in your painting)
- Simplify your color mixing - (spend more time painting and less time mixing by understanding color temperature, intensity, and value)
- Composition (if it feels right, it probably is right)
Supply list
Paints: Bring a basic split primary palette of colors.
- Yellows (one cool and one warm)
- Reds (one cool and one warm)
- Blues (one cool, one warm, and one neutral
- Earth Tones (most can be made with a primary palette
Brushes: Bring a variety of standard watercolor brushes (rounds and flats.) #6, #12 or larger rounds, rigger, or fine detail round. 1/2 inch and 1 inch flat.
Canvas or canvas board: Good quality paper. Examples include 100% rag, Arches, Fabriano, Waterford (Chris' standard paper), Kilimanjaro, etc. Cold Pressed surface, 140, 200, or 300lb. 11x15 sheets are acceptable or a watercolor block.
Miscellaneous supplies:
Board to tape your paper, making tape, kneaded eraser, pencil, and large watercolor palette.
Meet Christopher
Christopher Leeper is a full-time artist from Canfield, OH. He is the author of Realism in Watermedia, North Light. He has illustrated four children's books for the Smithsonian and the African Wildlife Foundation.
His work has been featured in several books and publications, including The Artist's Magazine, American Artist, Plein Air Magazine and Ohio Magazine. He is a member of the adjunct faculty in the Department of Art at Youngstown State University. He served as president of the Ohio Watercolor Society (2008-2012). Christopher graduated from Youngstown State University in 1988 with a BFA degree in graphic design.
