A Strategy for Drawing People

Emily Matthews Charcoal and white chalk on toned paper, by Andrea Clarkson
“Big to Small” and “Simple to Complex” are two principles I rely on when drawing and painting. If the complexity is simplified to basic shapes at the start, I can better judge proportions as the drawing progresses. By omitting or subtracting information, the drawing can be softened which is more characteristic of a young female like this model.
If you like to draw, the Hyter Portrait Group is a great place to sketch from life. The group meets at
Common Space One on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $5 per session. Check out the group’s Facebook page for more information.
